SOW TO SEW

A programme of educational and sensory textile workshops for schools and community groups

The aim of this programme will be to provide interactive learning environment and support mental well-being through multi-sensory and social skills activities like gardening, needlework and weaving.

The workshops will encompass all stages of textile production, from seed to cloth. This will be focused on cultivating flax and processing it into linen fibres which subsequently will become threads for weaving and embroidering.

Starter plots have been launched this year in collaboration with the Kingston Flax and Fibre Project. We have engaged University students and graduates,  primary school pupils and Kingston Mencap members. Our seeds were planted at Stanley Picker Gallery, outside the entrance to the Kingston History Centre and in The Searchlight Community Centre garden. Full programme will be launched in September 2024 during Kingston Heritage Festival.
