We are very excited to announce that this long-awaited participatory textile project is about to begin.
This will be based on the ancient craft and tradition of textile recycling from Bangladesh and India which will be interpreted in a new, contemporary way by different communities living in The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.
The technique used will be a simple running stitch that anyone can learn. We will host introductory workshops to teach the method and allow for exploration of textiles by producing small samples first. Participating groups and weekly workshops will be set up in various locations around Kingston.
The aim is to provide social interaction and support mental wellbeing. Cross cultural collaborations will encourage integration and inclusion promoting self-confidence, creativity, individuality and celebrating cultural diversity.
The project will culminate during Kingston 2025 celebrations in August next year.
